The reverse singing challenge: how to do it and get it right
In the reverse singing challenge you record a short phrase, play it backwards, try to sing the backwards version, then reverse your attempt. If you copied the reversed sounds closely, your flipped attempt sounds like the original phrase again. Pick a phrase of two to four seconds, loop the reversed audio at slower speed while you learn it, copy the sounds rather than the words, and keep your timing close to the original.
How the challenge works
The trend has four steps, and each one is easy on its own:
- Record a phrase. Say or sing a short line: a lyric, your name, a famous quote.
- Listen to it backwards. It sounds like nonsense, which is the point.
- Sing the nonsense. Record yourself copying the reversed audio as closely as you can.
- Flip your attempt. Reverse your recording. If you did it well, the real words come back, a little wobbly. If not, you get something hilarious. Both make a good video.
Reversy has a guided Reverse Challenge mode that walks you through these steps and lets you compare the original with your flipped attempt at the end.
Why it's harder than it sounds
Reversing audio doesn't spell words backwards; it plays the sounds backwards. A word like “cat” isn't reversed to “tac”: the hard t at the end turns into a soft rush of air at the start, and the c becomes a click at the end. Vowels that rise in pitch fall, and the breath before a word comes after it.
That's why you have to copy what you hear, not what you think the word should be.
Pick the right phrase
Your choice of phrase decides most of the result.
| Works well | Harder |
|---|---|
| Short lines of 2–4 seconds | Whole verses or long sentences |
| Clear, open vowels ("hello", "I love you") | Fast rap or tongue twisters |
| Your name or a friend's name | Lots of s, sh and t sounds in a row |
| A famous lyric everyone recognises | Words nobody will recognise when they come back |
Tips for singing backwards
- Loop it and slow it down. Turn on loop and play the reversed phrase at 0.5× until you can hum along.
- Break it into chunks. Learn the reversed phrase two or three sounds at a time, then join them.
- Exaggerate the vowels. Vowels carry most of the meaning when the clip is flipped back. Hold them as long as the reversed audio does.
- Mind the breaths. In reverse, a breath or a hard consonant becomes a swelling “hhh” sound. Copy it rather than skipping it.
- Match the length. Your attempt should last about as long as the reversed clip. Rushing is the most common reason the words don't come back.
- Record a few takes. The third take is usually the best.
Make the video
The best challenge videos show the whole journey: the original, the reversed version, your attempt and the flip. In Reversy, share your result as a vertical video and choose Both to play the original and the reversed version one after the other. Post it to TikTok, Instagram Reels or Stories, or save it to Photos to edit further.
Do the reverse singing challenge
- Record your phrase. Open the Reverse Challenge in Reversy and record a short line of 2–4 seconds.
- Learn it reversed. Listen to the reversed version on loop, slowed to 0.5× if it helps.
- Record your attempt. Sing the reversed sounds as closely as you can, matching their length.
- Flip it and compare. Reversy reverses your attempt so you can compare it with the original.
- Share the result. Export a vertical video and post it to TikTok, Reels or Stories.
Questions and answers
What is the reverse singing challenge?
A social media trend where you sing a reversed recording of a phrase, then reverse your own attempt to see if it turns back into the original words.
What's the best phrase for the reverse challenge?
A short, well-known line of two to four seconds with clear vowels, such as a famous lyric or someone's name. Long or fast phrases are much harder.
Why doesn't my flipped attempt sound like the original?
Usually because the timing is off or the sounds were copied as words. Slow the reversed clip down, learn it in small chunks, hold the vowels and keep your attempt the same length as the reversed clip.
Do I need to edit the video myself?
No. Reversy reverses your attempt automatically and exports a ready-made vertical video for TikTok, Reels and Stories.
Can I do the challenge with friends?
Yes. Record a phrase for a friend, share the reversed clip and see who gets closest. Sharing the before-and-after video is half the fun.
